Have you ever fallen for someone's...bookcase?

Posted on 08:22 by gaurav kumar

Years ago, my sister invited her friend Paul over to her apartment. While she was in the kitchen making some snacks, he took a look at her bookcase. At that moment, he says, he knew he would fall in love with her. Her bookcase revealed all her passions—from Roald Dahl short stories and funny plays to mountain biking guides and How We Die. She had even tucked The Baby-Sitters Club next to a book on Linear Algebra.

Three years later, they were married.

It's funny how much your bookshelf can reveal about you. So I was PSYCHED to hear about the new book My Ideal Bookshelf, in which one hundred creative thinkers share their absolute favorite books. The book interviews writers (Michael Chabon, Mary Karr, Jonathan Lethem) and chefs (Alice Waters, David Chang) and Hollywood personalities (Judd Apatow, James Franco) and big thinkers (Malcolm Gladwell, Atul Gawande) and musicians (Patti Smith, Thurston Moore) about the particular books that made them who they are. My only small quibble is that I wish the people explained why they chose each book, but overall the collection is fantastic and makes you want to curl up under a blanket and read all day.
So now, of course, the big question is: What's on YOUR ideal bookshelf? Mine would include: The History of Love, Epilogue, Ghost World, Peter Pan, Private Lives, Operating Instructions, Sense and Sensibility, The BFG, Middlesex, the list goes on...

Hurricane Sandy Bake Sale

Posted on 13:04 by gaurav kumar
We're having a bake sale downtown this Sunday to raise money for the hurricane relief efforts. Please come say hello and enjoy delicious treats. Kids are warmly welcome to help bake and eat, too. It will be fun; hope to see you there! xoxo

P.S. If you'd like to donate baked goods, that would be amazing; please package them as 2-3 cookies/brownies and label what you're donating. Feel free to bring them by anytime during the sale. Thank you so much!

10 favorite wallpapers

Posted on 08:15 by gaurav kumar

Our Brooklyn apartment hunt is slowing down (since apparently most people don't list their apartments before the holidays), but I've still been daydreaming about decorating! Wouldn't it be lovely to wallpaper just one wall in a bedroom or living room? Here are ten beautiful ones...

1. Paris. 2. Forest 3. Blue feathers 4. London gents 5. Grey waves 6. Sailboats 7. Bookcase 8. Owls 9. Morning in Manhattan 10. Animals

Aren't these pretty? Which do you like best?

4. Dog print, $38.
5. Brass dog for your desk, $28.
6. Glass, $6.
7. Custom pet portrait, $225.

Do you have a dog?

P.S. Puppy butt! Plus, dog names and more round-ups...

Encouragement

Posted on 07:30 by gaurav kumar
I've been feeling a little overwhelmed this week. Sometimes it's hard being a grown-up, especially an anxious one. But then my mom sent me this poem, and I'd love to frame it on my desk. It speaks so beautifully to the strength we can carry with us.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!
—Rudyard Kipling

How are you feeling these days, my loves?

P.S. Are you, too, a worrier?

Doggie bags

How cute are these dog totes? You can pick from nine adorable illustrations, or you can request a custom silhouette for an additional ten bucks. Too cute! Sigh, I'm becoming a dog person whether I like it or not.

Seinfeld posters

Posted on 07:38 by gaurav kumar
Rinee Shah created nine Seinfeld posters, featuring the food eaten on the show. Do you remember all the episodes these prints reference?

P.S. The ocean called. They're running out of shrimp.
P.P.S. The zoo called. You're due back at six.
P.P.P.S. Your cranium called. It's renting out space.
P.P.P.P.S. The jerk store called. They're running out of you!

Funny memoir

Posted on 10:52 by gaurav kumar
We chatted last week about books we love, and I forgot one of my favorites! Garlic and Sapphires is an incredibly entertaining memoir about Ruth Reichl's stint as the New York Times food critic. She would dress up in crazy costumes so restaurateurs wouldn't recognize her. Her costumes transformed her into an old lady, an English teacher from Michigan, a blonde divorcee from the South, a red-haired hippie...the list goes on. Her memoir is hilarious and compelling, and also has beautiful insights about food and relationships. Have you ever read it?

Flashback: I had the book on tape (which Ruth reads herself!)...and actually listened to it on a DISCMAN!

Any book recommendations?

Posted on 07:27 by gaurav kumar
Have you read any good books lately? I just finished mine, and I'm looking for something fun to read. Any ideas?! The other day I saw a little girl reading a Roald Dahl book in a cafe, and it made me nostalgic; maybe reading the BFG would be fun. I also loved The Glass Castle and Cooking for Mr. Latte, if you want a rec!

P.S. Another great book...

Have a fun weekend.

Posted on 08:09 by gaurav kumar
What are your plans for the weekend? We're going swimming this evening in a public pool in our neighborhood; hoping it's refreshing without too many floating Band-Aids:) Also, I'm psyched to share our bathroom makeover next week. Have a wonderful weekend, and here are a few fun links from around the web...

Cup of Jo gets a makeover!

Posted on 08:59 by gaurav kumar
So, I have some exciting news (to me, at least). After almost six years with the same look, A Cup of Jo is getting a long overdue makeover. The Brooklyn-based design firm Apartment One came highly recommended, and I was thrilled to collaborate with their uber-talented team, Liza and Spencer. The new design will launch in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, I'd love to ask you a question! After our first meeting, the designers presented me with four potential looks. Please tell me your favorite look (and, if you'd like, guess which one we ended up choosing). Here are the four options...

Option #1—Blue:

Option #2—Ivory:

Option #3—Sky:
Option #4—Handwritten:
Let me know your favorite below! I'd love to hear your thoughts... xoxo

Making friends as an adult

Posted on 07:22 by gaurav kumar
Alex wrote an article for last Sunday's New York Times about how hard it can be to make close friends in your thirties and forties. The astonishing thing is what a nerve his story has hit. The article has been viewed a gazillion times and is getting a record number of comments. It's fascinating to realize how many people feel the same way.

Read the story here, if you'd like, and weigh in: Have you, too, found it hard to make new friends after college? Do you wish you had more close friends these days? Do you ever find it awkward to "ask someone out"?

P.S. Seinfeld's take. :)

Girls paper dolls

Posted on 11:26 by gaurav kumar
Girls seems to be one of the most controversial shows in recent years, but I have to say, I really like it. The frank dialogue is totally hilarious, and it really captures a certain group of early twenty-somethings. (I also have a girl crush on Marnie.) What do you think? Love? Hate? Either way, you have to admit, these paper dolls are pretty rad.

P.S. Downton Abbey paper dolls.
